Like all big cats who live in the wild, your adorable little kitten is actually a formidable hunter. Hunting and catching prey is a big part of her natural behaviour, so there’s a good chance that your feline friend will sometimes like to bring her prey home.

Kitten Bringing Home Prey Keeping Hold

The main reason your kitten brings prey back home is to finish her hunt. When she first catches her prey, your kitten will grab it anywhere on its body that she can. To kill it, she needs bite its neck, but she can’t let go of her prey to do this because she's got no pack to stand guard while she does so.

Instead of adjusting her grip in the place where she caught the prey, your kitten carries it back home instead. That way, if the prey should happen to escape, she’ll be much more confident about catching it again.

Kitten Bringing Home Prey Little Presents on the Doorstep

When your kitten turns up on the doorstep carrying something she’s caught, it’s tempting to think she’s brought you a gift. In fact, your little hunter is simply following her natural instincts by finishing her hunt in a place where she feels safe, and where she won’t be disturbed by other predators.
